The low incidence that the coronavirus has had in recent weeks has made Spain reconsider eliminating the obligation to use masks indoors. Looking abroad, in Europe, Sweden eliminated this measure and after a month, positive cases of covid-19 continue to decrease. France will eliminate it as of March 14 and in Belgium, it is no longer mandatory as of Monday. These countries join Finland, Norway and the United Kingdom.
Last Monday at the Federal Committee of the PSOE, the President of the Government declared, regarding the use of masks indoors, that " this measure Special Data would be eliminated very soon, when determined by the Ministry of Health ", based on " the formidable response of citizens regarding vaccination and the lowest cumulative incidence in the European Union .”
The response to these statements by the Autonomous Communities has been very varied. Enrique Ruiz Escudero, Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid , is in favor of eliminating this measure, because according to what he declares, we are currently in a very different scenario than the one we had when the incidence of coronavirus was higher.
For his part, Iñigo Urkullu, Lendakari from the Basque Country , claims that the pandemic is not over yet and that people continue to die. According to him, the use of masks indoors should continue to be maintained since health experts warn that “ it is still early to relax preventive measures .”
Asturias, Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and Murcia remain expectant, do not take a position , and demand that the elimination of the measures be taken by consensus and according to scientific criteria. Within the framework of the Interterritorial Consensus, Catalonia, Andalusia and Murcia are in favor of the removal of indoor masks starting in schools . This proposal is supported by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics.
Next Thursday in Zaragoza, at the meeting to discuss the new public health surveillance system, the Government and the Autonomous Communities will try to decide whether this measure is maintained or eliminated. |
